GRAPHICS ON A LARGE SCALE

Aug 15 2014

Changing the external appearance of an entire building may initially be a daunting prospect, but with a bit of imagination and some expertise and help from The Window Film Company, anything is possible…

The Window Film Company was approached by a client on behalf of a popular and well known department store. The store wanted to refresh the appearance of one of its properties on Oxford Street by recreating a specially created design across over 140 large windows.

The Window Film Company was approached for a solution, with the first step being to carry out a site survey.  Whilst not appropriate for every job, the complexity and scale of this project necessitated a visit to assess the options. It quickly became apparent that due to the layout of the building, the application of film would have to be to the external face of the glass, in turn meaning the utilisation of access equipment.

An external application also means other considerations, such as the longevity and durability of the film. After discussions with the client, it was agreed that the graphics would be printed onto vinyl a film with tough and long lasting properties. It was also suggested that once printed, a layer of laminate be applied to each panel to give it further protection.
With the film type agreed, the graphics were supplied to The Window Film Company’s graphics team tasked with setting out the artwork for each individual pane. With in excess of 140 windows to be covered, it was vital that each pane l featured exactly the right section of artwork to ensure that the design flowed correctly across the building. Regular updates were provided to the client as the artwork progressed, with proofs also supplied for approval.

With the artwork finalised and approved, it was printed on The Window Film Company’s state of the art UV printer, used for its ability to deliver high quality, vivid colours. Each panel was checked and labelled, with every printed piece assigned to a particular window. With the printing underway, the Operations Team dealt with logistics, including the agreeing of a suitable installation period and the delivery to site of the appropriate access equipment.

The installation took place over a number of days, with The Window Film Company sending several of its fully trained and experienced installation teams to carry out the work.
The film was installed in order, pane by pane, as steadily the design overtook one side of the building. The finished product saw the entire side of the building completely transformed from an unmemorable, grey concrete structure into a bright and appealing feature – all achieved with imagination, experience and know-how.
