UP ON THE ROOF

Glass continues to be a popular material in the design and construction of buildings of all shapes and sizes. The appeal is clear, with glazing providing views to the outside as well as giving premises a sleek and impressive appearance. There can be downsides however, especially in the warm summer months.

The Window Film Company was contacted by a company whose North London office boasted an impressive set of roof lights. The vast expanse of glass allowed for magnificent views of the surrounding skyline, but also resulted in a problem with solar gain. The position and angle of the 30 large panels meant that the office was quickly heating up, creating an uncomfortable working environment within.

The Window Film Company was able to suggest a range of reflective solar control films, each with a different performance level and appearance. With the aesthetic impact of the window film a key consideration it was agreed that sample panels would be fitted, allowing the client to see how each film looks and behaves when installed. Three different films were fitted by one of The Window Film Company’s teams of professional installers and the client left to decide on the most appropriate film.

After continuing with the sample panels in place, the client was quickly able to make a decision, with the chosen film Medium Reflective Silver. The film was chosen because of the high levels of solar energy rejected, glare reduction and UV protection, all provided in a film that allows for a good view to the exterior and without sacrificing too much natural light. In summary, the heat issue was solved, whilst the look, feel and ambience of the office was retained.

The film was fitted at a time agreed with the clients, with the work taking place at a time designed to create the minimum of disruption. As each of the 29 panels was roof glass, the film was fitted using a boom lift, allowing for a perfect installation despite the tricky location. Each piece film was cut and trimmed to the precise size necessary and fitted quickly and efficiently.

The finished project resulted in the office enjoying cooler, more enjoyable temperatures, whilst still being able to enjoy the benefits of the extensive roof lights.
