BACK TO SCHOOL

Sep 05 2014

As the summer nears its inevitable conclusion, up and down the country schools and colleges are reopening the doors to their students. The annual break has been used by many educational establishments to undertake work that is difficult to complete during term time, with The Window Film Company carrying out numerous installations at schools, colleges and universities throughout the UK.

One such piece of work took place at a Carshalton based primary school, where heat and glare had been causing issues for students and staff alike.

Large expanses of glazing can be attractive for a number of reasons. From a design point of view they can help create an attractive looking building, whilst for those inside they can create a bright, airy environment as well as ensuring an uninterrupted view to the outside. There can however be a downside. By allowing the suns energy into the building, heat builds steadily throughout the day, often leading to uncomfortable temperatures. The school in question enjoyed the benefits provided by a large number of windows, but had also identified that heat was an issue.

In addition to heat, glare can also be a problem, with the bright sunshine of summer and low lying position of the winter sun making it difficult to focus, causing potential eyestrain. A combination of heat and glare was taking its toll at the school and The Window Film Company were approached for a solution.

With an understanding of the problem, it was possible to suggest High Reflective Silver window film. A high performance product, this particular film is one of the most popular solar control window films available, providing high levels of protection against the build-up of heat whilst also guarding against glare.

The film works by reflecting away a percentage of the sun’s energy before it has an opportunity to enter the room. It’s this that makes it a more effective solution than shutters or blinds, which allow heat to enter the building. The film also has the added benefit of not blocking the view as whilst the film appears reflective on the external face, the daytime view from inside is maintained.

The film also provides glare reduction of up to 81%, immediately making for a more comfortable environment, whilst also blocking up to 99% of the sun’s harmful UV rays – one of the main contributing factors to fading.

Samples of the film were sent to the client allowing them to experience exactly how the film looks and performs, ensuring that when purchasing, they would be making an educated choice. It was agreed that High Reflective Silver was the appropriate product and a quote was prepared and agreed.

With students due back to the facility in early September, the work had to be carried out by a specific deadline and it was the job of The Window Film Company’s operations team to ensure that an appropriate date and time was agreed for installation. The work was carried out by one of the Company’s fully qualified and vastly experienced fitting teams, who were able to complete the job quickly, effectively and to a faultless standard.

The finished project left the windows with a sleek and stylish appearance, but more importantly ensured that upon their return, the pupils and staff would enjoy a moderate temperature and a glare-free environment all year round.
