THE MAGIC OF MANIFESTATION

Jan 16 2015

Manifestation is the term given to markings that are applied to large panes of glass to ensure they are clearly visible. These markings serve to prevent accidents and The Window Film Company are experts in the creation and installation of both standard and bespoke manifestation.

St Mary’s church in Reigate recently underwent a substantial refurbishment, with part of the work seeing the introduction of several large glass doors and partitions. Glazing of this size requires manifestation by law, so the church contacted The Window Film Company for a suitable solution.

The legislation around manifestation requires that glass of a certain size requires manifestation between 850mm and 1000mm and between 1400mm and 1600mm above the floor. These are known as “critical locations” and must feature either a repeated pattern or a solid band with the material providing a suitable visual contrast with the background. The simple aim of manifestation is to prevent injury from accidental collisions and as such is an important part of the building regulations, but whilst the location of markings is set in stone, the appearance of the manifestation markings allow for more creativity and freedom.

The church was keen to use the need for manifestation to add some of their own identity to the newly enlarged facility and requested information about The Window Film Company’s bespoke service. The first requirement was to agree on the type of film used to create the manifestation. Frostbrite frosted film is a popular choice for manifestation as it provides the necessary contrast, whilst also delivering a stylish and contemporary finish. It can also be computer cut to create impressive looking patterns.

The alternative to cutting from film is to print directly onto optically clear film. This approach allows for the creation of elaborate designs without the need for cutting, meaning that even the most complicated artwork can be reproduced perfectly.

Due to the relative complexity of the artwork provided by the church, it was agreed that the manifestation would be printed, the frosted effect on optically clear giving the exact appearance of a cut film without the added complication of cutting and weeding. Proofs were created by The Window Film Company’s in house graphics and print team and with these approved; the print was carried out and prepared for installation.

The fitting was carried out at a time agreed with the church by one of The Window Film Company’s fully trained and qualified installation teams. Each team is experienced in every aspect of window film installation, having completed jobs in a vast range of varying and challenging locations. The film was applied, immediately bringing the glass into line with the necessary regulations whilst also giving the glass a stylish and personalised appearance.
