WALLPAPER AND PRINTED GRAPHICS FOR UCL

Jun 12 2015

The Window Film Company supplied and installs a range of products suitable for adding decorative elements to a number of different surfaces. Two such products were utilised as part of an extensive fit-out project for a London based University.

The Division of Psychiatry at University College London recently moved to completely refurbished premises which had been specially designed to provide the best possible environment for study and research. The new facility boasted a large number of glass partitions, creating individual spaces whilst still delivering an uncluttered and open feel.

The architects’ plans for the glass partitions featured an intricate frosted pattern, with some of the panels also incorporating text. The Window Film Company was approached for a solution, and upon receipt of the plans and designs was able to suggest recreating the design by printing directly onto optically clear film.

The intricate nature of the pattern meant that cutting it would be prohibitive as well as incredibly difficult to install. Printing the pattern onto optically clear film provides the same effect as a cut design, but allows for almost limitless intricacy and combinations of colour. The design was a custom creation and flowed across each partition, totalling almost 60 square metres of glass.

The desired effect was a frosted appearance, so using the Oce Arizona printer, one of three large format machines used by The Window Film Company, the in-house graphics team used different colour levels and combinations to provide a number of proofs for the client. With a suitable finish agreed, each panel was prepared, printed and cut at The Window Film Company’s Buckinghamshire headquarters.

In addition to the printed film, a decorative solution was also required for several of the walls in the reception area and throughout the facility’s corridors. These plain walls were to feature similar graphics to those on the glass partitions, but in a different shade and the inclusion of bold text, highlighting the name of the department.

Further printed proofs were provided to the client, enabling them to check the colour and finish before agreeing to proceed. The digital wallpaper was also printed on the Oce Arizona, delivering a vibrant crisp finish for each of the floor to ceiling panels, measuring just under 3 metres in height.

The optically clear film and digital wallpaper was fitted by a team of The Window Film Company’s fully trained and vastly experienced installation teams, with the finished installation giving the facility a bright, stylish and professional look and feel.
