GLARE REDUCTION IN READING

Jul 29 2016

Glare can be a serious issue. Throughout the year, sunlight can make it difficult to focus on screens, make it hard to read or engage in comfortable conversations. In short, it can lead to a very uncomfortable environment. The Window Film Company was engaged to deliver a  long lasting and effective solution.

The Berkshire based premises boasted a number of large windows and whilst this glazing delivered natural light and a welcome view to the exterior, the sheer volume of glass meant that the glare levels experienced within the property were at unacceptable levels.

After assessing the situation, it was agreed that High reflective Silver would be the most appropriate film. The nature of the building meant that an internal application of film wasn’t possible, so the external grade product would be used. Specially developed to deliver long lasting performance on the outside of the glass, External High Reflective Silver will deliver glare reduction of up to 83%.

The film brings with it additional benefits. The reflective nature of the film makes it an incredibly efficient solar control solution; reflecting away a large percentage of solar energy before it enters the building. This prevents the consistent build up of heat, which in the summer months can result in uncomfortably high temperatures. By clocking up to 99% of the sun’s UV rays, this film would also serve to help prevent fading - protecting machinery and furnishings from sun related damage.

Ahead of installation a survey was undertaken to assess the access requirements. The majority of the film was to be applied at first floor level, and the design of the building meant that a standard scaffold tower wouldn’t be appropriate. All of The Window Film Company’s installers are PASMA trained and qualified, meaning they are able to safely use a full range of powered access equipment. The survey revealed that this particular job would require a cherry picker.

With the film type and access plan in place, work could commence. It was a two stage project. The first element involved the removal of existing film which had been left in place despite ceasing to be effective. Over 40 large panes were treated, with all traces of the inferior film removed and the glass cleaned ahead of the fresh installation.

With variations in pane size, each panel was cut to the appropriate size and carefully finished to ensure a perfect fit and aesthetic appearance. One the course of a two day period, the large bank of glazing was transformed into an attractive and effective run of windows, with both the appearance and performance improved immediately.

With the film in place, the benefits were felt at once. Glare was reduced whilst still allowing natural light to pass through the glass and maintaining he view to the outside. Those inside the building would also benefit from a more moderate temperature and know that stock, equipment and furnishings would be protected from potential fade damage.
