Schools are a perfect example of a premises that would typically have a large number of windows. These bring with them clear benefits, not least excellent levels of natural light and a view from the inside out. However, during warmer periods of weather, untreated windows, especially when there is a large quantity, can result in the internal temperature rising rapidly and to uncomfortable levels.
Untreated windows allows heat to pass through the glass, in turn steadily increasing the internal temperature. This can lead to a reliance on expensive mitigation such as air conditioning units, or more basic methods such as drawing curtains and blinds. While air conditioning is effective, it results in high energy usage and increased bills, while also not being ideal for the environment. Drawing curtains or blinds is ineffective as heat is still allowed to pass through the glass, not to mention natural light and the view being sacrificed. An application of solar control window film is effective, without any of these negative side effects.
The film works by reflecting away a percentage of the sun’s solar energy before it can pass through the glass and add to the internal temperature. This is delivered by the mirrored external appearance the film has, effectively bouncing away a portion of heat before it can enter premises. The level of heat rejected depends on the film chosen, with High Reflective Silver being selected for this project at a Buckinghamshire secondary school. This is one of the most effective solar control films, delivering a solar energy rejection figure of up to 78%, while also reducing glare by up to 79% and blocking up to 99% of the sun’s potentially harmful UV rays.
As the images, taken from the inside of the premises after the installation, show – all of the benefits of the film are achieved without sacrificing natural light or the view to the outside.
