Heat and Glare Reduction Window Film Installed at Historic Salisbury Cathedral

The Window Film Company has completed a major installation of heat and glare reducing window film at the world-famous Salisbury Cathedral, helping improve comfort for visitors and staff inside the cathedral café and gift shop.

The project involved the application of high performance solar control window film to a large glazed roof area made up of more than 100 individual panes of glass, each measuring more than two square metres. The striking glazed roof creates a bright and welcoming environment while also offering impressive views of the historic cathedral above.

However, the fully glazed design also allowed high levels of solar heat and glare to build up during warmer weather, making the space uncomfortable for staff and visitors alike.

Following consultation between representatives of Salisbury Cathedral and The Window Film Company, External Grade High Reflective Silver window film was selected as the best solution for the project. Due to the location and access requirements of the roof glazing, the installation needed to be completed externally using a specialist external grade film.

The chosen solar control film delivers significant performance benefits, including rejecting up to 78.3% of solar energy to help reduce excessive heat build-up. It also cuts glare by up to 83.5%, creating a more comfortable environment for customers, visitors and employees throughout the day.

In addition to improving comfort levels, the film blocks 99% of harmful UV rays, helping protect interior furnishings, displays and surfaces from fading over time.

Despite its high performance, the film still allows excellent levels of natural daylight into the space and maintains clear daytime views from the inside looking out. The reflective external appearance also complements the modern glazed roof structure while improving solar performance.

The installation was completed over a seven-day period, with work carefully planned in coordination with the cathedral to avoid disruption to daily operations within the café, gift shop and wider cathedral site.

Once installed, the window film began working immediately, reducing internal temperatures and minimising glare to create a more enjoyable and practical environment for visitors and staff.

The completed project provides Salisbury Cathedral with a long-lasting and cost-effective solar control solution that improves comfort, helps protect interiors and enhances the usability of the glazed space throughout the year.
