Introduction:
Centurion Club is an exclusive golf club in Hertfordshire that has played host to some of the biggest names in world golf. The Window Film Company is proud to have completed an installation of heat and glare reducing window film at the prestigious venue, helping to deliver the comfort, experience and environment that members and visitors expect.
Requirement:
The golf course at Centurion Club is world renowned, having been graced by the best players from both the men and women’s golf tours. The Club also boasts a range of first class dining facilities, including the beautiful garden room. The room boasts wonderful views over the 18th hole, courtesy of large, floor to ceiling windows throughout.
While this glazing delivered a contemporary look, great views and high levels of natural light, it also meant that the area was prone to overheating and struggles with glare.
Excess heat can be a common issue in spaces with large amounts of untreated glazing, with the sun’s solar energy passing through the glass; steadily and continually adding to the internal temperature. During warm weather, this can result in rooms and spaces overheating and becoming uncomfortable.
Glare can be a similarly unwelcome issue, with the changing position of the sun making it difficult to comfortably focus. Both these issues were occurring in the garden room, and a window film that would address the problems of excess heat and glare while still allowing for a view out and matching the existing aesthetic of the building.
Solution:
After discussions with representatives from the club and gaining a full understanding of what was required, it was agreed that using two different films was going to provide the best possible window film solution.
With the glazing split into two levels – smaller panels at the top, large panels forming the lower, it was agreed that High Reflective Silver solar control film would be applied to the top panes, and Medium Reflective Silver to the lower, larger panes.
High Reflective Silver is a high performance heat and glare reduction window film, with the following performance data:
Total Solar Energy Rejected: 78%
Glare Reduction: 79%
UV Light Rejected: 99%
The film works thanks to its reflective appearance, which is external facing during daylight hours. This mirrored look serves to bounce away a percentage if the sun’s solar energy before it can pass through the glass, helping to slow down and reduce the build-up of internal heat.
Medium Reflective Silver has a slightly less mirrored appearance, but works in the same way, with the following key performance details:
Total Solar Energy rejected: 67%
Glare Reduction: 65%
UV Light Rejected: 99%
This was chosen for the larger lower panes as it has a slightly reduced impact on the appearance of the glass, delivering enough reflective properties to provide effective heat reduction, while also allowing for a daytime view out and providing an exterior look in keeping with the style of the building and surrounding environment.
Both films cut down on glare significantly; imagine wrapping glazing in a light pair of sunglasses and you will have a decent understanding of how the film works in this regard. The harshest of the sunlight is filtered out without blocking high levels of natural light, or preventing a daytime view out.
These solar control window films also deliver the added benefit of reducing UV rays by up to 99%. UV light is the biggest single contributing factor when it comes to fade damage, so by blocking these potentially harmful rays, the films provided a way of slowing down any potential fade damage.
Installation:
The work was carried out by a team of The Window Film Company’s fitting teams, with the installation planned and completed for a day and time when the area was out of use. The film was applied to the internal face of the glass, and was effective immediately, reducing heat and glare while maintaining the stylish external appearance of the building and maintaining a daytime view from the inside out.
