1. How will one way privacy window film look on my glass?
We are often asked whether it is possible to achieve privacy without changing the appearance of the glass. In most cases, it is not.
To deliver one-way privacy, the most effective and widely used solution is a reflective window film. Once applied, the film creates a mirrored appearance on the exterior side of the glass during daylight hours. This reflective surface prevents people from seeing through the glass from outside, while maintaining the view from the inside looking out.
2. Will one way privacy window film make it dark inside?
In most situations, applying window film will have some effect on light transmission. It is important to be clear about this.
However, modern window films are designed to minimise light loss as much as possible. Unless you choose a specialist blackout film, you are unlikely to notice a significant reduction in natural light levels, even when using reflective or mirror films.

3. Will privacy film work at night?
Reflective privacy film works by responding to the balance of light on each side of the glass. The side exposed to the brighter light becomes reflective, similar to a mirror.
During daylight hours, the outside is usually brighter than the interior. This causes the external face of the film to appear reflective, creating the privacy effect.
When the light becomes brighter inside than outside, which typically happens in the evening when interior lights are switched on, the effect reverses. In these situations the glass may appear reflective from the inside instead.
For most homes and commercial spaces this is not a major issue, as blinds or curtains are usually closed after dark.
It is important to note that there is currently no window film that provides true two-way see-through privacy. If privacy is required both day and night, frosted window films or white frosted films are usually the most suitable option.
4. Does privacy film go on the inside or the outside of the glass?
Whenever possible, The Window Film Company recommends installing window film on the interior surface of the glass.
Installing film internally provides the best long term performance, as it is protected from weather conditions. External grade films are available for situations where internal installation is not possible, but exposure to the elements means they generally have a shorter lifespan.
In summary, what are my privacy options?
One-way privacy or reflective films
Ideal for daytime privacy or locations where lighting conditions can be controlled.
Frostbrite frosted film
Frostbrite creates the appearance of acid etched glass, frosted glass or sandblasted glass. It provides excellent privacy while still allowing natural light to pass through.
Blackout or solid vinyl
Available in a range of solid colours, this option blocks visibility from both sides of the glass and significantly reduces light transmission.
Printed graphics
Using wide format printing technology, The Window Film Company can produce full colour graphics that create a completely bespoke privacy solution.
One-way graphics
Using patented Contra Vision technology, we can create striking one-way graphics that allow outward visibility while displaying graphics externally.
