Heat and Glare Reduction at Cambridge University

Introduction

The Window Film Company has improved the comfort levels of students and staff at Cambridge University by completing an installation of heat and glare reduction window film to a university residence.

Requirement

The William Stone Building is a Grade 2 listed, eight-story building in the heart of Cambridge, that plays host to 34 self-contained accommodation units for university students and fellows. The building is famous for providing some of the best views of Cambridge, thanks in no small part to the large windows that are a feature of each room.

While the large windows provide excellent views of the historic city, the untreated glass meant that rooms could often overheat, with the suns solar energy passing unchecked through the large panes, quickly raising the internal temperature – often to uncomfortable levels.

Glare could also be a year-round problem, with bright sunlight making it hard to comfortably focus. The Window Film Company was contacted to provide a heat and glare reduction solution, that would deliver high performance without blocking the views from the inside out.

Solution

After assessing the location and the requirement for high performance while still allowing for a daytime view out, it was agreed that Climate 35 solar control film was the most appropriate solution.

Key Performance Data:

  • Total Solar Energy Rejected: 68%
  • Glare Reduction: 60%
  • UV Light Rejected: 99%

The film was a good fit for this project as it has been specially developed to deliver excellent heat reduction and protection from glare, while also taking on a more neutral appearance and allowing excellent levels of natural light to pass through.

The film delivers heat reduction by rejecting a percentage of the sun’s solar energy before it can pass through the glass and add to the internal temperature. The film also acts to filter out the harshest of the sunlight, reducing glare (which, due to the ever changing position of the sun, can be a year-round problem) and creating a more comfortable environment, without drastically reducing light levels or the view to the exterior.

In addition, Climate 35, in common with the majority of solar control window films supplied and installed by The Window Film Company, blocks up to 99% of potentially harmful UV rays – the biggest single contributing factor to fade damage.

Installation

The film was applied to a total of 146 large panes, totalling over 240 square metres of glass by a team of The Window Film Company’s expert window film installers.

The work took place during a specific time window, during which the units were unoccupied, allowing the work to take place without any disruption to the students and staff.

The film was installed to the internal face of the glass, and once in place, was effective immediately.

Summary

  • Window film installation at Grade 2 listed building.
  • Climate 35 heat and glare reduction film applied internally.
  • Window film applied to 146 panes covering over 240 square metres.
  • Immediate heat and glare reduction without blocking the view out.
  • Works planned and completed for when the rooms were vacant.
  • Film applied by expert window film installers from The Window Film Company.
