CRACKING THE MANIFESTATION (BAR)CODE...

Oct 21 2013

Depending on the size and location of glazing, manifestation can be a legal requirement. With the primary function of making glass visible and avoiding accidents, manifestation must meet certain standards but can take virtually any visual form, allowing for eye-catching, bespoke solutions.

Manifestation is usually required when there is full height glass in windows, partitions or doors – common occurrences in offices and workplaces. With numerous glass walled meeting rooms and partitions in their Hertfordshire office, our client required over 30 linear metres of manifestation.

As a company that specialise in creating inspiring work environments, our client was understandably keen for their manifestation to look as aesthetically pleasing as possible. A range of ideas were discussed, with a barcode design emerging as a favourite. The Window Film Company were able to supply a design, and using the measurements supplied by the client, create a visual proof. The proof highlighted a need for some minor changes, with the client requiring more space between the bars and stripes that made up the design. The amends were made by The Window Film Company’s in-house graphics team, and the updated design approved.

On full length glass, manifestation is required at two positions, between 850mm and 1000mm, and between 1400mm and 1600mm from the ground.  It is possible to meet these requirements by applying two rows of manifestation, or by using a single application of a band or design big enough to feature at both positions on the glass. The barcode design was 500mm in height and covered both locations.

The design itself was created by cutting bands of varying width from Frostbrite frosted film. In giving the glass a sandblasted, acid etched effect, the frosted film provides the necessary contrast with the glass, making it clearly visible.

As an additional part of the job, meeting room names were cut from frosted film and applied to the glass doors throughout the office. Each room was named after a City, making each room clearly identifiable to members of staff and visitors. The Cities, which included London, Sydney and Paris, were computer cut from Frostbrite, ensuring a perfect finish and stylish appearance, in keeping with the chosen manifestation design.

The manifestation and cut graphics were fitted by a team of The Window Film Company’s installation teams, whose training and experience allowed them to fit the film with the minimum of fuss and intrusion. The end product not only ensured that the office meets the relevant legislation, but also helps creates an environment that is interesting, dynamic and professional.
