FIGHT AGAINST FADE

Aug 29 2014

For retailers, windows are a key component in attracting customers. They play a huge part in attracting customers into the store, with window displays the perfect opportunity to illustrate what’s on offer inside. As well as being a valuable marketing opportunity, windows and glazing can also cause unwanted issues. One of the most frequent problems is fading.

The Window Film Company was approached by a London based organic food retailer who were suffering with that exact problem. Their Ealing based store benefits from a number of large windows, allowing a fantastic view of the shop interior for passers-by. The downside to the expanse of glass – there are 14 large panes – was that the store was suffering from fading. There are three main contributing factors to fading, with the biggest cause being the sun’s UV rays. The Window Film Company offer a range of specialist films that block up to 99% of these rays, thus providing excellent protection against fading.

Whilst stopping fading was the key challenge, there was one major stipulation – that the film didn’t prevent vision into the store. With this in mind, The Window Film Company suggested Climate Ultra. This anti-fade film has been specifically designed to deliver the highest possible performance with the minimum aesthetic impact; it is virtually undetectable when installed.

One of the most advanced window films available, Climate Ultra will also help reduce glare, will reduce solar gain (important as heat is another contributing factor to fading) whilst blocking 99% of the sun’s harmful rays – all delivered whilst allowing for a completely uninterrupted view into and out of the premises. A sample of the film was sent to the store, allowing the owners to see the film at close quarters before committing to a purchase.

Having experienced the film in situ and developing a full understanding of the performance capabilities of the film, the store owners decided to go ahead with the project. At this stage The Window Film Company’s Operations Team took over, organising the logistical aspects of the job. This included ensuring provision for a scaffold tower as some of the film need to be installed at a height of over three metres. The operations team also organised a date and time for the installation to take place – agreed with a view to ensuring any disruption to what is a busy store was kept to an absolute minimum.

The installation was carried out by one of The Window Film Company’s fully qualified and vastly experienced fitting teams, whose qualifications include PASMA training – allowing them to work safely at height. The work was completed quickly and efficiently, with 14 panes of glass, each well over a metre in width fitted with specialist anti-fade film. Once complete, the film was effective immediately, serving to protect the stock, furnishings and equipment whilst maintaining the view into and out of the shop.

To the naked eye, nothing had changed, but the reality couldn’t be further from the truth. Reduced glare, diminished excess heat and a block on virtually all harmful UV rays meant the store was now more comfortable and was being constantly protected from the unwanted effects of fading.
