NEW LOOK AT NORWICH UNION

Mar 21 2014

Transforming the entire appearance of a building may seem like a time consuming and expensive project, but with a bit of creativity and help from The Window Film Company, it doesn’t need to be…

The Norwich Union building in Nottingham had been identified as needing an aesthetic overhaul, and the architect tasked with delivering the facelift contacted The Window Film Company for assistance.

The building is a large facility covering several storeys, with each storey home to large expanses of outward facing glass. It was this glass that was identified as a way of improving the appearance of the building. A design had been created that involved multi-coloured vertical stripes running the full length of the building, starting at the very top window and running seamlessly to the bottom. It was up to The Window Film Company to bring this idea to life.

With a total of 204 glass panes to be filmed, a number of options were considered. Coloured rainbow film was an option, with the possibility of computer cutting strips of coloured film and applying them uniformly to each pane to ensure a continuous pattern down the building. The sheer number of individual panes necessitated a different solution.

To ensure complete uniformity, it was agreed that each pane would have a bespoke panel of film, with the pattern printed onto it. This would allow for a perfect recreation of the pattern throughout.

The design was to be printed onto clear vinyl, a durable and long lasting film that provides an excellent surface for print. By printing the design instead of using pre-existing coloured film it was possible to have complete control over the colours used, allowing the exact colours provided by the architect to be matched. It would also make certain that the pinstripes would be created in perfectly straight lines, flowing perfectly from the top of the building to the bottom.

With the process agreed, samples were printed and sent to the architect for approval. During the approval process a team was sent to survey the building, so that the exact sizes of each window were recorded and made available to the graphics team, who could in turn make the perfect size printed panel for each window.

With the sample prints approved, the film was printed and cut to size, ready for installation.

The design of the building meant that access to the glass was often obstructed, so scaffolding and other equipment was required to complete the installation. The Window Film Company’s teams of expert installers are vastly experienced as well as being fully trained, allowing them to complete installations efficiently, effectively, safely and to a high standard – whatever the situation or location.

The installation was completed over a number of days, with the each of the 204 panels fitted with the precision required to ensure the pattern flowed correctly. Once installed, the side of the building took on an entirely new, bright and vivid appearance, completing a pleasing and eye-catching transformation.
