NO HEAT WORRIES IN WOKING

Jul 08 2016

The large bank of glazing at the front of Woking’s Church of the Good Shepherd makes it one of the most recognisable buildings in the area. Unfortunately for those inside, it also made it incredibly hot and uncomfortable. The Window Film Company was contacted for a solution.

A film was sought that would reduce both the heat and the glare, whilst also allowing light to pass through into the church and protecting the view to the exterior. Another important consideration was the external appearance; it was vital that the selected film had a suitable aesthetic appearance so as not to affect the look and feel of the building and the local area.

Reflective window films are the most effective products when it comes to solar control. They work by bouncing away a percentage of the suns energy before it passes through glass, in turn preventing the steady build-up of internal heat. The Window Film Company offer a range of these films, each varying in appearance and performance. Taking into account the consideration the requirements of the job, The Window Film Company recommended light reflective silver as the most appropriate product.

Light Reflective Silver rejects up to 55% of the sun’s solar energy and reduces up to 48% of glare – another issue facing the church regulars. Once applied, the film also blocks 99% of UV  rays, serving to protect the inside of the church against fading. A sample of the film was sent to the project manager, allowing them to install a small cross section of film and to observe the look and appearance at different times of day and in differing light conditions. It was agreed that the film was an appropriate choice and the installation was subsequently booked.

Film was to be applied to just short of 100 panes, with some of the glazing over 6 metres above ground level. This necessitated the use of a scaffold tower, supplied and constructed by The Window Film Company. The two man team fitted each panel in turn, carefully cutting each to match the pane, cleaning each piece of glass to ensure a perfect installation.

The work was carried out throughout the course of one day, meaning no disruption to the busy programme the church operates.

Once installed, the film was effective immediately, cutting down heat and glare with a minimal external aesthetic impact.
