EASING EYESTRAIN IN ESSEX

Oct 28 2016

Whilst the UK might have seen the last of the warm weather for a few months, the sun can still have a big impact. Glare can be a particularly persistent problem during the colder months of the year – the lower lying position of the sun resulting in bright light streaming through glass at an awkward and potentially uncomfortable angle.

This was the situation at an Essex based office. The front of the building was made up of large glazed panels and the glare was creating a difficult and uncomfortable internal environment. The Window Film Company was approached for help.

After discussing the situation, a recommendation was made suggesting the application of The Window Film Company’s High Reflective Silver window film. The film reduces glare by up to 81% and is effective as soon as it is installed, filtering out the harsh light whilst still allowing natural light to pass through the glass.

The film also serves to slow down the fading process by clocking 99% of the sun’s harmful rays, and in addition, will protect against solar gain during the summer months, stopping the steady build-up of heat and ensuring a more moderate temperature during periods of warm weather.

In terms of appearance, the film gives the exterior face of the glass a silver, mirrored appearance – a sleek and stylish finish that was perfect for the exterior of the modern building in question.

Samples of the film were sent to site, allowing for the project managers to experience the film in situ, experiencing first-hand how the film behaves at different times of day and in different lighting or weather conditions. It was agreed that High reflective Silver was the suitable solution and the order was placed.

The next stage of the project was to organise the logistical arrangements. This part of the process is handled by The Window Film Company’s dedicated Operations team, and it was their first job to arrange a suitable installation time and date. The office is a busy working location, so it was important to liaise with the client to arrange a time and date for the work to take place that resulted in the least possible disruption. This was particularly important as the installation required a scaffold tower and work around the entrance to the building.

A 5 metre access tower was required to complete the installation, with a large quantity of the glazing substantially above floor level. Whilst this element required careful planning, The Window Film Company’s teams of installers are fully qualified and experienced at working at height, allowing them to complete the job efficiently and with the minimum of fuss or disruption.

In total, 12 large panels were filmed, with the window film applied to the internal face of the glass. With the job complete, the glare was reduced immediately resulting in an instantly more comfortable environment for those working in or visiting the office.
