KEEPING COOL WITH WINDOW FILM

Apr 24 2020

The return of warmer weather is often gleefully welcomed, but it can bring with it discomfort. Conservatories can quickly over-heat and homes or offices with large windows can also quickly become uncomfortable. So how can you beat the heat?

Window film is an easy to install and hugely effective way of reducing excess heat in your conservatory, home or office. Available in a range of grades and finishes, there is a film for every situation and location. But how does it work?

Solar control film works by bouncing away a percentage of the sun’s energy before it is allowed to pass through the glass and add to the internal temperature. This is done via the films reflective appearance, acting to reflect away heat before it can impact on the temperature inside. The way the film works means it is more effective than curtains or blinds, both of which are set back from glazing, meaning that heat is allowed to pass through the glass before effectively being trapped inside.

Another benefit of solar control film over curtains and blinds is that it doesn’t block the view from the inside out. One of the nicest things about warmer weather is the lovely levels of natural light; the last thing people want to do on a bright summer’s day is to block out the light to try and keep the temperature down. Solar control window film delivers effective heat reduction while still maintaining the view; a simple way of describing the effect is to imagine placing a light pair of sunglasses over your windows.

The aesthetic impact of the film will depend on the type you choose, there are a number of options to choose from, and our team of experts are on hand to talk you through the options. An installation of solar control window film can be achieved with nothing more than a few standard household tools or implements. Each order comes complete with step by step instructions and a plastic application squeegee to help with the process. The next question then; How do I fit my solar control window film?

Where possible, we recommend an internal installation - applying the film to the inside of the glass. If this is isn’t achievable, please call to discuss our range of specialist external films. before fitting, take the time to clean your glass as thoroughly as possible. Then, use a plant spray bottle to cover the pane with a soapy water solution (a few drops of washing up liquid mixed with water will do the trick). Carefully remove the backing sheet from the film and coat the exposed film with the soapy water. Take the film to the glass and allow it to flow into place; the water will act as a slip solution, allowing you to position the film correctly.

Use the squeegee to push the moisture to the edge of the frame. Then, if required, use a sharp craft knife or similar to trim the film, using the edge of the frame as a guide.

Once installed, your solar control film will be effective immediately, not just serving to help maintain a moderate, enjoyable temperature throughout the warmer months, but also delivering addition benefits such as reduced glare and protection from potential harmful UV rays.
