RIGHTING ROOFLIGHT HEAT

Sep 05 2025

The Window Film Company offer a window film installation service, fitting window film for a range of solutions including heat reduction, safety, security and privacy, in both residential and commercial settings. In short, if you have a glass related issue at home or in the office, the chances are, The Window Film Company will be able to help.

This includes fitting film to tricky to reach locations, such as rooflights. This project necessitated the installation of heat reduction window film throughout a large modern home, with the film needing to be applied to a series of rooflights throughout the property.

Excess heat and uncomfortable temperatures occur when solar energy is allowed to pass constantly through glass, in turn steadily raising the internal temperature. This can be felt particularly acutely during spells or warm weather. Using blinds or pulling curtains are ineffective solutions as not only do they still allow heat to pass through the glass, but they also block the view and natural light. On this occasion, the location and size of the rooflights also meant that this approach would be impractical. The homeowner therefore sought a window film solution.

Heat reduction window film works in a simple yet highly effective way. During daylight hours, the film takes on a reflective external appearance, which serves to reflect away a percentage of the sun’s solar energy (heat) before it can pass through the glass and add to the internal temperature. The percentage of solar energy rejected depends on the film chosen, but it is important to note that an application of window film will not make your room feel unduly cold, instead serving to reduce the excess heat that passes through windows.

In addition to helping to ensure a more enjoyable internal temperature, this type of window film also reduces glare (a potential year round problem thanks to the changing position of the sun) while also helping to protect against UV rays - the biggest single contributing factor to fading. The majority of solar control window films supplied and installed by The Window Film Company will block up to 99% of UV rays.

The film chosen for this project was Climate 35, one of a range of films that have been specially developed to provide a more neutral appearance when installed to the glass, making it an ideal choice for situations where solar control is important, but visual impact is a significant consideration.

The window film was applied to the internal side of the rooflights throughout the property by a team of The Window Film Company’s fully qualified and vastly experienced installers, using carefully constructed internal scaffolding to reach the glazing in question.

Once in place, the film was effective immediately, delivering excellent heat reduction (as well as cutting down on glare and blocking harmful UV rays) while still allowing a view to the outside, with excellent levels of natural light allowed to pass through the glass.
