Making the most of manifestation

There are some things that simply can’t be avoided. It could be colleagues talking about Love Island or the football, arguments over what level the air conditioning should be at or Ed Sheeran on the radio. All are an inescapable part of everyday life and if you have glass partitions in your building, you can add manifestation to that list, too. Read on for details of what’s required by law and how The Window Film Company can help.

The purpose of glass manifestation is simple. It’s designed to stop people walking into glass and injuring themselves. We’ve all had close shaves, realizing floor to ceiling glass is there at the last minute before narrowly avoiding an embarrassing and painful collision. Manifestation markings are there to stop it happening.

The technical requirements surrounding manifestation are actually fairly straightforward:

  • If you have full height (floor to ceiling) glazing, you are required by building regulations to have manifestation.
  • You will be required to satisfy requirement M1 or M2 of the Building regulations of 2000.
  • Manifestation markings are required at two levels, between 850mm and 1000mm and between 1400mm and 1600mm above floor level.
  • The markings must contrast visually with the background seen through the glass.
  • Manifestation can take the form of a logo at least 150mm high or a decorative feature of at least 50mm high.

In short, manifestation markings need to be visible at two defined heights and must be of a minimum size. The good news is that if these two criteria are met, you are free to get creative.

Manifestation provides a fabulous opportunity to incorporate branding elements, logos, imagery, text, patterns or colour into your premises and onto your glass, turning a regulatory requirement into an eye-catching feature or an enhanced part of an interior design scheme.

The Window Film Company can create custom printed full colour designs, cut graphics and text, solid bands or repeated patterns – the choice really is yours.
