Martyn's Law and Protect Duty - Getting Prepared

The Government has announced the introduction of a new law designed to improve the safety and security of public spaces and venues. Widely known as Martyn’s Law, the new regulations will require organisations to assess potential security issues and take appropriate steps.

With glass and windows a major feature in the majority of public venues and buildings, the safe management and protection of glazing is likely to be an integral feature of any new proposals and with over 20 years of experience in the industry, here at The Window Film Company we are always available to provide help, information and advice on the best way to protect glass from both accidental and malicious damage.

The exact nature of the Protect Duty will be finalised following a consultation period, but with the Government accepting many of the initial Martyn’s Law proposals, it is clear that owners of public buildings, venues and other public spaces will be required to take steps to ensure that premises are as safe and secure as can be reasonably expected.

The Government has made it clear that requirements will be “proportionate and reasonable” recognising that each location will require a different plan and approach, depending on size, location and a host of other factors. Part of any safety survey has the potential to include glazing and how glass, a fragile and potentially hazardous material, can be prevented from causing damage or injury.

Since being established in 1998, The Window Film Company has supplied and installed a range of advanced and reliable window films and attachment systems, offering cost-effective, high performance protection for glazing of all sizes and types.
