Glass and accidents are an unhappy combination. As we all know, accidents can happen at any time in the home, whether it be a stray football from the garden, a slip or a trip or even in the case of intentional damage, broken glass quickly becomes potentially dangerous and damaging. An application of safety window film is the straightforward and cost-effective way of adding a layer of protection to your glass.

What is safety film?

Safety window films is designed to be fitted to existing glass and windows, with an application to the internal face of the glass the optimum option. The films offered by The Window Film Company differ in thickness, with a range of grades available, with all applied to glass using a water based (and easy to complete) fitting process.

How does safety glass film work?

The job of safety film is to hold glass together in the frame in the event of accidental of malicious damage. Glass becomes dangerous when it breaks and the resultant shards fall in on themselves, potentially damaging your home or injuring those inside. The film will provide an extra layer of protection, so the glass will be more resistant to breakage, but the primary function is to prevent damage or injury in the event of breakage.

By holding the glass together if it does shatter, safety film will not only provide a protective function, it can also act as a security feature, making it more difficult for unauthorized access through a broken window. Both safety and security are serious issues, so to get a complete understanding of what is available, how it functions and what it can achieve for you and your situation, we recommend calling one of our experts on 01494 7944477 or email info@windowfilm.co.uk.

What does safety window film look like?

Standard window film is clear in appearance, meaning that when it is applied to glass, it is virtually invisible to the naked eye. This allows you to enjoy peace of mind without changing the aesthetics of your glass, delivering the maximum impact when it comes to protection and the minimum effect on appearance.

It is possible to apply safety window film alongside other window films, so if you’d like to add a decorative effect to your glass or reduce excess heat, a dual application of window film is possible.

How do I fit safety film?

Fitting window film from The Window Film Company is a straightforward process that can be successfully completed with no prior experience and nothing more than a few household objects. Firstly, clean your window thoroughly. Next, create a soapy water solution by adding a few drops of washing up liquid to a plant spray bottle full of water. Use the spray bottle to completely cover your window with water, before removing the backing sheet from the window film. Then use the spray bottle to completely cover the exposed surface of the film, take it to the window and allow it to flow onto the glass.

Use an application squeegee (supplied free with every online order) to push any moisture to the edge of the pane, using a dry, clean cloth to mop up any remaining water.

Achieving “safety standard” with safety films

If you decide to have your safety film installed by one of The Window Film Company’s expert fitting teams, your glass will meet British safety standards as a result, and will be fitted with a kitemark to confirm this. The thicker safety window films can be more challenging to install, so depending on the choice of film or your specific requirement, we might recommend using our nationwide fitting service.
