Grappling with graffiti

Vandalism can be as costly as it is unwelcome. Glass is particularly vulnerable, with damaging techniques such as scouring and acid-etching becoming increasingly commonplace. A recent project undertaken by The Window Film Company involved the fitting of protective film at the Battle of Britain memorial in Folkestone. One of the displays at the site in Capel Le Ferne is a model depiction of the battle, set in a glass case and placed below ground level. The unique display is designed to be viewed from above, with the glass top to the case forming part of the walkway and allowing the view into the exhibit.

With thousands of visitors visiting the site and walking on and around the exhibit, by applying anti-graffiti film onto the 1.5m x 1.5 section of glass, it was possible to protect it from either malicious or accidental damage. In the event of vandalism or unwitting damage, the film is simply removed and replaced, meaning the glass is protected without any visible alteration to the appearance.

This particular installation was required by a very specific deadline – a royal visit! With the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh due to visit the site, the trustees were understandably keen to ensure that every part of the monument was in as perfect a condition as possible. The application of film would ensure that the glass remained blemish free for the visit, also benefiting the members of the public that would continue to visit and enjoy the monument.
