From January to March of 2015 the gallery was host to a powerful exhibition by American artist and photographer Rashid Johnson. An integral part of the display was a single black and white photograph, repeated hundreds of times in a tiled formation across each wall of the gallery space, forming a unique backdrop to the three month long show.
Having discussed the requirement with the gallery, The Window Film Company were able to suggest digital wallpaper as the appropriate product. What starts life as a plain white roll can be printed on in full colour to create a fully bespoke decorative solution with the paste-free application process allowing for an efficient installation and the hard-wearing and durable nature of the product making it suitable for use in high traffic areas.
The image, a bold, iconic photograph of a child holding a gun, was provided to The Window Film Company’s graphics team who set about creating proofs for both the gallery and artist to approve. It was of paramount importance that the image was displayed the precise way the artist required, as the wallpaper would play an integral part in setting the tone of the exhibition. To achieve this, several alterations were made to the colour levels, with a number of different settings tried until the perfect colour balance was established.
With the proofs agreed, the print was carried out by one of The Window Film Company’s UV printers, the state of the art technology and high quality ink delivering a sharp, vivid reproduction of the image. With four large walls to be covered, over 150 square metres of wallpaper was printed ahead of the fitting.
The installation was carried out over a three day period, with one of The Window Film Company’s fully trained and vastly experienced teams taking time to ensure each “drop” of the wallpaper was perfectly aligned, delivering the desired tiled effect running seamlessly across the four walls of the gallery space. Due to the height of the walls, a three metre scaffold tower was required to carry out the installation, with the logistical issues organised well in advance by The Window Film Company’s dedicated operations team.
Once complete, the wallpaper provided an impressive and powerful backdrop with the image repeated countless times throughout the large space, creating a striking staging area for the exhibition which ran from 28 January to 7 March 2015.
