Protect your premises with window film

Glass can be a fragile material, and in the event of an incident such as a bomb-blast can be instantly transformed into potentially lethal flying shards. The Window Film Company has long since offered a range of high quality safety and
security films, but is now is a position to offer some of the most advanced anchoring systems available, providing a comprehensive safety and security solution.

In isolation, safety window film performs a valuable role. Available in different thicknesses, grades and finishes, once applied the film will provide an added layer to the glass, making it more resistant to breakage. If the glass does shatter, the film ensures it does so safely, holding the broken glass together instead of allowing it to fall from the frame in dangerous, sharp shards.

In an increasing number of situations, buildings are facing heightened risk with the continued threat of terrorist activity. Premises that have been identified as being at risk need to take steps to mitigate against the possibility of an attack, and there are a range of anchoring or attachment options available. These systems work by anchoring the window film to the window frame so that in the event of an explosion, the system holds both the film and the window in place. One of these products is the Madico GullWing™ anchoring system.

After a recent security review, a premises in Newcastle was identified as being at risk. As one of the few organisations authorised to supply and install the Madico range of anchoring systems,  The Window Film Company was approached for a solution, and following extensive discussions to enable a full understanding of the threat and protection level required, it was agreed that the GullWing system was most appropriate. This system utilises a flexible membrane that is attached to both the filmed glass and the window frame. The membrane expands when the glass is acted on by an outside force, absorbing a part of the energy created, helping to keep the glass within the window frame and protecting those within the premises.

Once installed, the aesthetic impact of safety film is usually limited, as most security films are completely clear. On this occasion an additional layer of Frostbrite frosted film was applied to the glass to deliver a privacy solution. The frosted film gives the glass the appearance of acid etched or sandblasted glass, preventing vision from either side of the glass. The anchoring system fits neatly into the edges of the window frame, with the Gullwing taking on the appearance of part of the frame. The attractive finish is an important aspect of the job, but the most important aspect of all is that those occupying the building can now be assured that they have the best possible protection should the worst come to pass.

Other anchoring systems include Wet Glaze™, FrameGard™ and LifeLine™ with more information on each system available online here.
