Safety Film for the NHS - Northamptonshire

The NHS have a huge portfolio of properties throughout the UK, and as part of a planned refurbishment programme, a number of locations in the Northamptonshire region required windows that meet the current safety standard.

Building regulations dictate that glass of a certain size in specific locations is required to be of safety standard. Achieving this standard doesn’t have to mean expensive replacement glass. An application of safety film from The Window Film Company will bring the glass up to the necessary level.

Seventeen locations were identified as requiring safety glass as part of the project, so to get a full understanding of the situation at each property The Window Film Company undertook a full survey. This involved a visit to each site, an assessment of the existing glazing, any access issues as well as taking measurements of each window. This data was then used to provide a quote for the work as well as a project proposal, detailing when the work could be carried out.

It was agreed that the film used would be 100 Micron Safety Film. This specialist film is clear in appearance and therefore doesn’t alter the appearance of the glass when applied. It will immediately bring the glazing up to safety glass standard. The film will make glass more resistant to breakage, but if the pane does break, the film ensures it breaks safely. It does this by holding the broken glass together and preventing it from breaking into individual shards that fall in on themselves, creating an immediate and dangerous hazard.

With over 250 square metres of glass to be filmed across the 17 sites, it was necessary for the work to be carried out over a number of visits. The Window Film Company’s Operations Team have responsibility for organising the schedule for the installation teams, and by liaising with the NHS, appropriate fitting dates were agreed. The properties were all operational, so flexibility was required – it was important that the installations were carried out with the minimum of disruption.

With the programme of works agreed, work commenced. The Window Film Company’s teams of installers are fully trained and vastly experienced, allowing them to complete their work quickly, efficiently and professionally – vital when working in busy public locations such as hospital buildings. The work took place over a two week period, with a total of four visits required to complete the entirety of the job.

Upon completion of the installation, each pane was fitted with a kitemark indicating the window’s compliance with the appropriate safety standard.

The application of window film to the properties delivered the required outcome in a far more cost effective and time efficient fashion’ the alternative of replacing the existing glass would have been both expensive and time consuming. The Window Film Company were able to complete the project within the agreed timescales and with the minimum of disruption to each of the buildings, which continued to function during the work.
