Whilst many films provide a range of benefits (for example, solar control film won’t just help with excess heat, it will also help with glare and fading) there are some films that are designed with a very specific purpose in mind. This is an introduction to two of them.
Graffiti can be an expensive and time consuming problem. Large windows remain a magnet for vandals, who use markers, spray paint and even acid-etching or scouring to leave their mark. Paint and other ink can be difficult to remove, whilst etching can cause irreversible damage. Anti-graffiti film will help in each circumstance.
In the event of glass being attacked with spray paint or magic markers, the specially manufactured coating on the film will ensure that the graffiti can be removed quickly with nothing more abrasive than household cleaning products. If a more serious incident occurs, with vandals using scouring techniques, the film protects the glass by providing a sacrificial barrier. The marking only affects the film, which can be removed and replaced – the cost of replacing film being significantly less than the cost of replacement glass.
The film is a clear product and once applied is virtually undetectable to the naked eye. It can also be used to protect a range of other surfaces including marble, stainless steel and mirrors.
Amber 81 is a speciality film, for use in situations when extreme UV protection is required. The amber colour of the film provides additional protection, blocking UV rays into the low visible light region.
Applications for the film include research facilities, medical operating rooms and photography labs with the ability to block UV beyond the 400 nanometre (nm) range, making it one of the most advanced UV protection products available.
Amber 81 is also a solution for those with photosensitivity related conditions. The image above depicts an application of the film at a school, where a pupil suffered from an accute condition that required constant protection from sunlight. The structure was built specifically to allow the student to play outside, with the application of Amber 81 providing the necessary protection. The film provides excellent protection in cases like this, but whenever the product is used for medical purposes, expert advice should be sought.
These advanced films are just an example of some of the solution-lead products that are now available, with the nature of window film making it a more cost-effective solution than replacement glass or other more involved resolutions.
